'Oysters are Forever' Bowl

Sophie Lanigan

Regular price $50.00

‘Oysters are Forever’ celebrates the powerful filtration capability of these native bivalves that work to cleanse the sea. Oysters are essential for sustaining biodiversity - their frilly shells provide habitat for smaller sea life, the organism filters up to 180L of seawater per day, and their strong shells can help prevent coastal erosion. They are an integral part of the marine ecosystem.

Oysters are Forever is a project of designer Sophie Lanigan, and is manufactured in Sydney by Defy Design, who are leaders in the precious plastics movement The project seeks to address plastic waste in the ocean by using 100% post-consumer-plastic as the material for the shell.

The shell form is based on a real Sydney Rock Oyster shell from dinner party, that has been 3D scanned and manipulated digitally to function as an object. The oyster has been scaled up to function as a bowl and is about the size of a hand. You might use it as a catch-all for keys, coins and jewellery or in the kitchen for salt, dips and nuts.

'Oysters are Forever’ is part of the global Precious Plastics movement. Made from 100% post-consumer-plastic, each shell reuses approximately 150g of a single use plastic to make a long lasting product.
